Who Sees the Seemen... or whatever. [Mar. 7th, 2009|04:43 am]

OMFG YOU GUYS! [Mar. 4th, 2009|07:54 pm]
[mood | quixotic]

Just got this e-mail from Nicktoons:

"Thank you for your interest in the Nick Writing Fellowship.

Yes...noticing this and pointing it out does make a difference and we
will be sure to remove your spec from the binder.

Thank you,
Writing Fellowship Staff"

"I Hate Flash Sites" Or "How I Failed a Writer Fellowship Before It Began" [Mar. 4th, 2009|02:54 pm]
[mood | quixotic]

I found out about the Nicktoons writer fellowship at the beginning of February. I had a month to get everything done, so I fully realize that this is mostly MY fault.

But due to stress and job hunting and general lack of motivation making me do everything last minute, I'm so going to blame this on the FLASH based website containing all the info.

You see, I have an aging computer. I've had it since August 2006 which IS technically only 2 and a half years, but that's a ripe old 142 in computer years.

The point is, FLASH doesn't work quite right for me anymore. It eats up my resources, locks up my computer, runs choppily, takes extra smoke breaks, eats on the job - I can barely watch a YouTube video without sacrificing a virgin dove to the Dark Lord Satan.

But it seemed to work well enough for the Nick Writing site. I got info from the FAQ and the guidelines. Nothing seemed to be missing, so I didn't worry about it.

So, I finished my spec, got to Kinkos, printed it out, tossed salt over my left shoulder, and shipped the material. But before I shipped it, I had to figure out HOW to package it. All it said on the application form was to "attach" the application, a resume, and bio to two copies of the script.

I had Kinkos hole punch the two copies of my script and asked if they had brass fasteners ("Brass Fasteners" would make an excellent name for a ska band). They did not. I really wanted to use brass fasteners, but I also didn't want to LEAVE Kinkos for fear of losing my place in line and having to wait another three hours while the only person in front of my chose between three different headshots to mass produce.

So, I grabbed a pretty looking cover with three rings and stuck everything in that. It wasn't a hard binder, it was soft and looked professional with a small footprint. I thought that might work better than mailing a hard plastic binder better suited to bomber manifestos and a hard copy backup of all my LiveJournal entries.

So, that's how it was sent.

Tracking showed that my script arrived today. I got excited and nervous all at the same time. And when I get nervous, I triple check everything I did. So I went back to the site...

Some pages were suddenly scrolling that weren't before.

WTF?

So I frantically read through everything I couldn't the other day and notice this on the submission guidelines:

Appropriate spec scripts must be:
~ Comedic
~ Live Action or Animation
~ Based on a half-hour television series
~ Currently being produced for primetime network or cable
~ Typed in standard script format
~ In black ink
~ In 12pt courier style font
~ On 8-1/2 x 11, 3-hole punched white paper
~ With only two brass fasteners (top & bottom)

All spec scripts must include a cover page listing the show name and show title, along with your name, address, and telephone number (please do not put your name on every page).

The following materials will NOT be considered: feature-length screenplays, hour-long dramas, pilots, treatments, outlines, plays, short stories, books, graphics, magazine/newspaper articles, poems, headshots, audio/video tapes, digital media, loose leaf pages or scripts bound in 3-ring binders.

Please note: Submissions that do not adhere to these guidelines will not be considered.

Before, it ended at "~Based on a half-hour television series" and there was no scrolling. I'm sure that this was due to my computer's dislike of FLASH and not some late addition... but it doesn't help the fact that I sent it in a fecking three-ringed cover thing!

*headdesk*

Again, had I managed to start earlier, I may have looked at the site the one more time it would have taken me to get the scrollies working - but, also, had their site not been BUILT IN FLASH I would have noticed this as well.

Oh well. At least I have a completed spec script now. A couple more and I can just get a gorramed agent or something.

In other news - I got a "conditional" job offer from AT&T. It's call center stuff and I'm kind of excited. The condition was a pee test, which I just found out I passed. So now I just wait and stres just a little until I sign actual paperwork.

Where did my icons go? I see them on my profile page but not on my entries and when I edit them... I can't choose anymore...

Nevermind - found where to change it - must just be an LJ issue.

I had an interview today! [Jan. 23rd, 2009|01:02 pm]
[mood | quixotic]

I just realized I hadn't really updated LJ in awhile. Been busy for long form blogs. 140 characters at a time is much easier to swallow and I can do it from my phone when my LAPTOP'S OUT OF COMMISSION! (Long story...)

Anyway, it's back now. The quick update is I did get laid off. I have been looking for work. And the most promising job out there is something I interviewed for today.

And it went pretty well... I think.

I say, "I Think" because it didn't end with, "YOU'RE HIRED!" But it also didn't end with a vague, "We'll be in touch..."

It ended with, "I'll call you back by Wednesday." I don't know what that means, but at least there's a DAY to look forward to.

The guy that was interviewing me seemed... reluctantly positive. But he was a Southern good-ole boy, and that type ALWAYS seems reluctantly positive to me. You know, like they think about it, seem unsure, but nod their head? That could be his most positive expression, or maybe he is unsure about me but they need workers?

Either way - I have some hopes!

As long as I didn't screw it up after I got home...

I thought about my interview on my drive home and realized I shouldn't have approached the interview like an INTERVIEW... but like how I would approach dealing with bidders - basically I should have treated the interview like the job. The employer basically told me that a lot of the job was phone work and building relationships so people will give you better prices, etc...

So, upon getting home I decided to show I could do the job while showing enthusiasm about it and selling myself. I decided to call him back, thank him for his time, and ask him if there's anything I can do to help prove to him that I can do the job and fit in.

So I did. And it went to voice mail. Which is fine, you leave messages in this job. So I started speaking, and it was going really well, and then I hit a snag and paused.... I paused for far too long. I needed to start over. I looked down at my phone to make my way to the menu to rerecord my message when.... the call ended.

I don't know if my phone hung up, or if the VM did. But he now has a VM of me being gung ho.... then a sudden long pause....and then the call ending.

*HEADDESK*

Phones screw up. It just happens. I'm sure it's happened to him. I just hope it's the beginning that matters.

*fingers crossed*

Ughness. [Jan. 5th, 2009|10:56 am]
[mood | calm]

Had a fever all yesterday and found out today that I'm definitely getting laid off. (Work out the end of this week and then get two weeks paid vaca.)

I don't feel as stressed as I should, though. So, I'm hoping this is just leftover crap from 2008 (You know, how shoulderpads and big hair survied a LITTLE into the 90s?) and not a hint at what's to come for '09.

A Supernatural Epiphany [Dec. 30th, 2008|08:15 am]
[mood | amused]

We got to the first episode with the Roadhouse last night when I realized something:

Supernatural is a Dukes of Hazzard remake done RIGHT. (Well, the first two seasons, anyway.)

HankSam and Dean are the Duke boys, of course.

The Impala is the General Lee, also of course.

Bobby is TOTALLY Cooter - the "god in a box" they call when they need info, to fix something.

John and Yellow Eyes have a dark twist on the Uncle Jesse/Boss Hogg relationship.

Jo is original Daisy (Not movie Daisy, ugh!).

And Meg is Rosco.

...Sorta.

"Breaker One, Breaker One, I might be crazy, but I ain't dumb! Craaazy Cooter comin' at ya! Ya'll out there on the Hazzard net?"

Supernatural [Dec. 29th, 2008|12:32 pm]
[mood | geeky]

I've been wanting to watch this back through again for awhile, but I was waiting until I could convince Mel to watch it with me. I had a feeling it'd be up her alley (Muscle cars, 70's music, big guns that shoot supernatural beings). But she always claimed disinterest. She said that the bits she caught while I was watching never caught her attention.

Finally, over the holiday break, we were eating and there was nothing to watch. I suggested Supernatural and she reluctantly agreed.

For the first few eps she said nothing. It'd be dinner and we'd check to see if anything recorded, nothing had, so I'd play the next Supernatural episode. But then, it finally happened. Time to eat, I go to check the TiVO, and she says, "No Supernatural?"

I just smiled and played it.

We've only got one ep left in the first season now. We almost watched it last night, but I was only getting 3 hours of sleep as it was.

Anyway - now having gone through 99% of the first season a second time I have some observations/questions -

Mostly only Season 1 stuff. One very vague reference to something in Season 4 that I don't think is spoilery the way it's worded... but, other people might. )

Anyway - I heart this series even more on second viewing and I can't wait for it to return in a couple of weeks! YAY!

[info]sidhedreams asked - "If you were casting me in a biographical movie, who would you pick to play the part of me? What about yourself?"

So I pose the same question to my f-list. I don't care if it's for looks or personality or other, but please explain if it's an odd choice. :)

Bonus points for casting [info]mistressbanshee.

*Cough Cough* [Dec. 6th, 2008|02:07 pm]
[mood | still sick]

Was home sick yesterday. Voice completely disappeared, so I spent most of it resting on the couch or twittering. While on the couch I used the HELL out of my 360's ability to stream Netflix. Streamed some Captain N ("BEHOLD! THE ULTIMATE WARP ZONE!") starring Lt. Gaeta as Kid Icarus (Seriously. Also... Kevin AKA Captain N kept saying "PAUSE!" but I swear he was totally pressing the select button.).

Also streamed Teeth, that movie about a vagina dentata. Actually enjoyed it. It was odd, but listed itself as a dark comedy.

Also streamed a lot o live action "The Tick."

But yesterday wasn't JUST about NetFlix. I also watched REGULAR TV. Finally caught up on this week's NCIS (Anyone else think that Ziva is STILL messing up English on purpose for attention from DiNozzo?) and also finally watched that "24: Redemption" TV movie.

Though, watching Robert Carlyle in it made me want the next one to be subtitled "days later" and be Jack Bauer vs. Zombies. (Anyone else notice split screen weirdness? Early on there were two guys talking on the phone but there were THREE screens up. One for each of the guys on the phone and one for a girl in bra primping in the mirror. She WAS in the same room as one of the callers but did she REALLY need the biggest pane?).

And lastly, Paul [info]kingofbreakfast Dini's episode of Clone Wars aired last night. If they were all like that, the series woul be a LOT better.

And now, it's random link time.

Watch out for the Facebook virus.

2,700 year old stash of pot found. They had to hit some of it. No way they didn't. In the name of science, of course!

Bettie Page is hospitalized. Sucks so hard.

Trailer for Batman: Arkham Asylam is up. It's the game that reunites Paul Dini, Kevin Conroy, and Mark Hamil.

Almost Live with Paul and Misty Episode 17! [Dec. 4th, 2008|11:59 am]
[mood | quixotic]

It's that time again!

More interesting stories from Paul, melodic tones and humor from Misty, and awkward interruptions often involving flat jokes from me!

Also - Jingle Belle is out today! And Paul's episode of Clone Wars airs this Friday!

Enjoy!
